About CAPS Certification Class
The Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) program is designed to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to support homeowners who want to age safely and comfortably in their own homes.
CAPS Course Overview
CAPS I focuses on effectively communicating with aging-in-place clients and their families, understanding their concerns, and navigating the challenges of reaching and serving this unique market.
CAPS II explores essential design concepts and common features that make home environments safer, more accessible, and more livable.
CAPS III brings the learning together through real-world case studies, allowing participants to apply their knowledge to practical aging-in-place scenarios.
What a CAPS Professional Is Trained In
A Certified Aging in Place Specialist has specialized training in:
The unique physical, emotional, and lifestyle needs of older adults
Aging-in-place home modifications and accessibility solutions
Common remodeling projects related to safety and usability
Identifying and resolving barriers within the home environment
According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB):
“The CAPS designation helps you make your clients’ homes more visitable. Even if homeowners don’t believe they need additional task lighting, grab bars, or other modifications for their own use, family members and visitors might. CAPS helps you guide clients toward the right choices and provides greater security in a remodeling market niche that continues to grow in popularity.”
Professional Standards and Industry Value
The CAPS program, developed by the NAHB, requires graduates to meet prescribed standards of business practice, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold a rigorous code of ethics.
Professionals who earn the CAPS designation gain a strong understanding of:
Product specifications and quality standards
Proper installation techniques
Best practices that ensure high-quality, safe, and durable outcomes for consumers
Who Needs CAPS Certification?
CAPS certification is valuable for anyone who works with individuals who are aging in place—or who may be considering home modifications to support long-term safety, accessibility, and independence. If your role involves housing, health, design, or client advocacy, CAPS can strengthen your expertise and credibility.
This certification is especially relevant for:

Architects, building designers, and structural engineers
Real estate professionals, including sales agents and developers
Medical and healthcare professionals
Mobility equipment specialists and assistive technology professionals
Home health providers and care coordinators
